Cherrywood Challenge 2023

Well now....

I can not believe my Cherrywood entry for 2023 was chosen to travel!

That is 6 years in a row.

Every year I tell myself...

'this is where it ends!'

I am so honoured!

The theme was Monarch with only these colors.

Same criteria...

20"x20"

Only Cherrywood Fabrics from the bundle.

Monarch inspired

This is mine!

It makes it's first appearance at Houston Quilt Festival next week!!

I got my inspiration when we went to Las Vegas last November.

The floors in the Wynn Hotel were covered in butterflies on point!

Even the walls!

I had been following Timna Tarr for a while now
and
this looked so much like some of her works!

I had taken an online class with her that fall.

I figured this was the perfect size to try out her technique!

I started with a picture I found on Pinterest as a starting point

I gridded it by folding into 1"x 1" increments
(yup..insert CRAZY here)

Did a little coloring to make best use of all the colors..

It was CAT(Lucy) approved...

I started with row 1

Easy peasy...just shades of green

Yes...I questioned my sanity
 when
I got half way through the applique of each little square

But I was loving the results

If you get a chance to stop by the exhibit in Houston be sure to check it out!

These quilters are incredible with their talent and thinking outside the box.

These little 20" works of art are stunning in their techniques and talent of each quilter.

I can not believe they think any of mine were good enough to be part of these exhibits!

Here are my entries from the past...

This was my first time entry to these challenges

2018 - VanGogh

I figured I love blue...let's see what we can do!

2019 - Prince
(the singer - since he lived in Minnesota where Cherrywood Fabrics is)

I loved purple... what the heck?!!

2019 - Princess Dianna

I don't love pink
 but
knew as a Canadian I had to try to do Lady Di some justice

Lady Di has been everywhere like me..

Even France and is still on tour!

2020 - Bob Ross

There are no mistakes...just happy accidents!

I watched Bob with my mom as she has been a painter all her life!

Was sooo sure this was a loser...what do I know!

And seriously...where were we going in 2020....

NO WHERE!

2021 - Graffiti

This was my first attempt....

I was just putting some finishing touches on it
and
this wave of 'THIS IS NOT THE ONE' came over me.

I had this idea first so I scraped up what scraps I had left and made a second one.

I should have followed my heart in the first place!

This is travelling some where in the world as we type.

My Weapon of Mass Creation!

So give yourself a shot at trying something new!

You never know!

This year is Poppies.

Just click here if you're interested!

It was just announced so you have lots of time.

I ordered my bundle from Cotton Harvest Quilt Shop in Ontario

Thanks for reading!

Now go.... be creative!

Cherrywood Challenge

Since 2020 did not go as ANYONE planned...

The 2020 Cherrywood Challenge

was

postponed to January 2021

This year the color was pink

and

the subject was Lady Diana

I am not a fan of pink

but

being Canadian I thought should give it  a try.

This is what I came up with....

Will this one be chosen to travel in 2021?

I will let you know!

Bob is still out there touring...

Bob Ross 2019

As well as Prince.....

PRINCE 2018

My Van Gogh is home from a World Tour!

It was a show in France at the Bohin Factory!

Van Gogh 2017

If only it could talk...

What will be Cherrywood Color for 2021?

2019 Block Party Fall Retreat

Terry and I managed to fill my truck up
 with
 everything but the kitchen sink!

We were off to Circle Square Ranch for our fall retreat!

Even though my heart was really in Houston

at the debute of Bob Ross/ Cherrywood Challenge

But thanks to my friend, Jymmi Kaye Demchuck...

She took me with her in spirit...

Bob and I.....

Jymmi Kaye shared her cookies with me
as
she showed me her class projects each night...

She also took my copy of the book
to
have it signed by the other winners!!

Can't thank her enough for allowing me to be in both places at the same time!!

Retreat started Thursday and ended on Sunday!

25 of us quickly got set up....

It's incredible to take one box of pieces

to create a master piece in no time!!

We had amazing show and tell!

Bonnie....

Collette's bargello

and Falling Stars...

A couple of baby quilts...

Colleen Koot made a doll quilt....

This is another Tannis Fahlman pattern.

It was the Mystery for the Regina guild last year.

Colleen used fabrics from travels to make this beauty!

Colleen made some seasonal  pieces...

and this duvet cover of wild animals

Deb's was a work in progress still...

We were very honoured to have this young lady back!!

Dot Lawrence is 84 years young

She had had a tough year.

She broke her right leg and wrist in a fall early this year.

She spent a long time in recovery.

Just as she was getting up and running again,

she had a brain hemorrhage.

We were blessed to have her just released
 and
able to spend the weekend with us!!

She spent alot of time under this quilt this year!!

Heather P did a fabulous job with her Canada quilt...

Heather is a machine!!

Seh pumps quilts out left and right!!

She even quilts them herself and gets them all LABELLED!!!

Jane finished this cute log cabin quilt...

Margaret....

Margaret is an inspiration beyond for me.

She is 87 years young and her taste is stellar.

She makes Laura Heine patterns into works of art!!

This was her own design using Laura's techniques...

Her Elm Street is just amazing!!

It looks like a panel but it's all cut out of other fabrics to make a picture!

Sandi had quite a few finished from our last retreat.

Sandi and I LOVE Shabby Fabrics Quilt Store.

This was some ombres from that store!!

Though the Y seams nearly put her over the edge!!!

Chris made this black and whites!

Donna's Fire Escape in Batiks!

Maria's commission quilt....

MJ finished with cabin quilt.

Love the border!!

Peggy is so good with colour!!

She made this quilt for the Weyburn guild as a donation quilt.

How nice was that of her!!!

Sharon worked hard on her stockings....

Christmas is coming!!

Terry W showed this masterpiece!!!

It won her an Olisio iron at the Carlyle Show this summer!

This was one of the many quilts she worked on this weekend

Terry F finished a rail fence quilt among other projects!!

Trudi was a busy bee trying to get pieces completed
for
Winter Green in Regina,Sk this weekend!

It was a good time.

Lots of laughs by the fireplace!
We were fed like pigs at a feeder!!

I will save our guest feature for the next post!
